What A Change! (Siding Update)

One Week Ago:

Today:

We removed ALL of the wood from the front and east side of the house today (except the corners)!

I pried wood from the fronts of the windows:

Those white things are the original headers and sills. They seem to be in excellent condition... a little sanding and paint, and they'll be good as new! Now you can REALLY see why getting the exact size of window MIGHT be non-negotiable.

Here's a view of the door's header... it's in the same vein, though much thicker:

Tomorrow: Wood and steel siding come down off of the west side!

Your house looks wonderful. Can you leave the brick as is or do you have to paint? I look forward to your progress.-Priscilla, Freeport NY

So....are you going to change the main picture on your blog? Or keep it as a reminder of how far you've come?

WOW!! I thought the house looked great before, even with all the wood still on it, but it looks AWESOME now! That does it, I'm tearing my shingles off.

Rebecca: I wondered that too. And I totally think it should be a composite picture, half before, half after.

Thanks all! It's been very rewarding. I hope the rest of it turns out, too.

Karen and Rebecca... I'm TOTALLY doing a composite. But I have to finish the house first. New porch columns to replace the rotted and inaccurate current ones, a new front door... though I might put one up when we finish the tear-off. We'll see how lazy I get.

Jayne~ I hope you have the luck we seem to be! It's really been pretty easy... just a lot of mindless manual labor over and over. Nothing too skilled. It took us about 3 days to get ~546 square feet of asbestos tile off... they were 6 or 7 hour days, but not entirely on the siding removal.

Priscilla... No decisions... we still haven't uncovered all of it, and there is a lot of delamination and chipping going on. We'll think long and hard over our options first, though!

Fantastic. If you can do all that maybe you can make your windows yourself?

It looks gorgeous!

Was there any water damage inside the wood panels?

The brick looks so much better. I'm curious what you are going to to do about the corner of the wall. We have vinyl siding from the previous owner and I shudder to even think about removing it.

I haven't checked in here for quite some time and—whoa! You have really been at work, and the results are mind-boggling. Lovelovelove the revealed brick.
