Our New Compost Pile in No Man's Land

In honor of Chile's new challenge, "Cut the Crap - DECLUTTER", I finally finished a project started last summer! I built a compost pile and wood pile in the space we call "no man's land" between our garage and the fence.

Photobucket

I used pallets salvaged from the city recycling center to create a frame for the compost pile... I'm starting the compost on one side and finishing it on the other. The pallets had been sitting around since last spring... just waiting.

There's more wood for the pile in the backyard... it just needs cut down to size and stacked. Lazy summer nights around our fire-pit, here we come!

By the way, the red garage is NOT our garage; I just noticed that big hole in it today. I'll have to patch it for them since they can't see it! (It's the property line).

Compost pile is on my list, too-- and I planned to use pallets, as well. Since we have the dog and one cat back there, I was thinking I'd make a box-like structure and put hinges on one panel. That way the dog is more likely not to rummage in the ruins.

They make SUCH a difference. We always had one when I was a kid and our veggie garden was the best!

And I'm very jealous of the fire pit.

You're lucky to have so much space for your compost. We built two stackable compost enclosures two years ago and they've worked out really well--both for containing everything neatly and for allowing easy and frequent shifting of the compost (which is really the secret of quick breakdown). Here's
a link to the 'Fine Gardening' article we used for reference. Ours are a little different because we built them from our old Ikea Sten shelves, but they work just as well.

Good job re-using materials and decluttering at the same time! And you're a nice neighbor to be planning to patch their hole.

Amalie~ We are lucky that this little strip of land isn't part of our backyard anymore (we fenced it OUT of the yard last summer). We gave up on having a compost pile with dogs until we fenced it out. I think that fully enclosing it with a hinged door is a good iedea, though... I think it would keep the pups away!

I've thought about composting, but I have no idea what I'm doing. I even have a good spot for a pile. If it's this easy, maybe I should try harder to figure this out...

Patching your neighbor's garage - you are a star. There are only two steps to great compost - layering, a layer of kitchen scraps (veggies only) followed by a layer of lawn clippings, then manure of some sort repeat the first two ad infinitum, and turning the compost every six months.
