Environmentally Safe Draino

Our bathroom sink clogged again. Instead of using Draino, a very caustic chemical, I used an all natural method of clearing the drain.

Ingredients:
Baking Soda
Vinegar

First, pour a little baking soda into the sink around the drain:

Then, pour a little vinegar into the sink:

Pour it quickly, so that the force of the pouring carries the baking soda down into the drain.

Repeat 4 or 5 times, or until vinegar immediately runs down the drain.

This works great as a clog preventer, too (if you remember).

I am told that heating up the vinegar, and/or running very hot water afterward helps.

If you heat the vinegar in the microwave, mind the fumes. They'll make your eyes water.

Thanks for the reminder. I've done this before and it's actually kind of fun.

Speaking as a plumber, It is best if you dont put anything down the drain, Caustic or not. Take the trap off, clean it out, snake the line or sometimes you can clean with a Drain King system Be that as it may sometimes a person just wants a chemical to do the work for them and what you have come up with works great!

Karen~ Great hint! I'll remember that next time I do this!

Why S~ It's like a 3rd grade science experiment in your sink!

Rob~ See... I KNEW someone would call me out on that! Of COURSE the most environmentally friendly thing (and best for plumbing) is to use the little drain snake. Our sink is EXTRA hard to unhook, though... the plug lifter has to be unscrewed and then pried out first... and the blockage is always in the upper 6 inches right under the drain... so I like to do this to keep the actual dismantlings as far apart as possible. Stupid cheap sink and drain~

I've never seen that drain King system... that looks neat!

With our old sewer and mature trees (and a low spot), we have our plumber out every year for a rooting!

I prefer the drain king system- it uses water and nothing else. Of course the trouble with it on a bathroom sink is you have to remove the pop stopper as well to get it paste the double drain sink that every one has in their bathroom sink- (The overflow drain is part of the sink) But removeing the pop up is not that hard- just remember to replace the plug before trying a drain king!

Thanks so much for posting this "recipe"!!! I had read this in an article years ago and couldn't find it anywhere!! We have septic, so even if drano wasn't extremley toxic....we have to be very careful what we put into the drains. Thanks again:}

I totally need to go do this in my boys' bathroom right now. Of course who knows what is down there. Toys? Stickers? Playdough?

That is a great tip for a quick fix. Even though I agree with robj about cleaning and snaking the line. But sometimes you have no time for it.
(Like when find your sink clogged during the morning rush, when you are getting yourself and family ready for the day, and everyone is lining up to use the bathroom but the basin is overflowing)
I am against using and keeping harsh, caustic and poisonous chemicals around the house. For environmental and safety reasons. Specially when you have children.
So this sounds great to temporarily solve the problem.
Adding that to my quick fix repertoire.
