More Porch Posts and a Decision Needed!

We did pick up THESE posts for free at one point... they are 6" wide, but aren't really traditional. I'm not sure they will work, so I hadn't mentioned them yesterday.

OK... here's the test run (in powder blue): I just leaned them up there.

Now... I have to make a decision soon (like by tomorrow or so), because I have an offer for someone to buy the posts for about the amount I need to buy 4 of the ones from Lowes (Edited to add... I'd just need to add $100 or so. On the other hand, if I use the blue posts, I can sell the remaining 7 or 8, and use that money to buy beadboard for the porch ceiling...) So... salvaged not quite right historically that need a little work to be perfect, or new construction closer to original, but are hollow and maybe not as "nice" of craftsmanship?

I 100% appreciate your desire to use salvage as much as possible, but I think if the ones from Lowes are closer to what you want that you should get them. You have spent a lot of time returning your house to its original look and, while I think these posts you picked up wold look fine, you don't want to feel like it's a bit mismatched just to salvage 4 posts. So I say sell them and get the new ones!

Yeah, except that the Lowe's ones are the wring size, right? Only 4"? Maybe mock those up to scale and see if the spindli-ness makes them really inappropriate. Scale is really important on exteriors.

If you can sell these and buy what you want and feel is right that is what you should do.

Plus in a sense you are still recycling since someone else will use these on their home.

Try this place....look under porch posts http://www.vintagewoodworks.com/index.html

Should add... selling them would give me MOST of the money...I'd just need to add $100 or so. On the other hand, if I use the blue posts, I can sell the remaining 7 or 8, and use that money to buy beadboard for the porch ceiling...

Jen~ I'm just not sure. After doing more research, I think the ones we could possibly afford are going to be too spindly... sigh!

Sarah~ Oops! Wrong link. They sell 3 sizes... I was thinking of the 5 or 6 inch ones!

Dynochick(Jan)~ I LOVE that website. If I could afford the 6 " posts off of there... but they are $300 each, if I remember! Beautiful posts, though.

I think you have them upside down in the photos you show. They are the right proportion....If they are in good shape I'd use those.

Whenever I have been in a situation like yours where I reaaalllly want something but can't justify the price tag....I start selling stuff on eBay. I swear people buy the darnest crapola. I usually make more money than if I had a garage sale and I didn't have to waste days preparing for the sale.

I love the base they have for sitting the posts on when you have a concrete porch.

Ask for a print catalog. It's great just for the info and ideas.

Get the ones that look right.

Even if it means waiting until you've saved up for them.

Using new instead of vintage is unfortunate, but I think having just the right look is more important, especially on the front of the house.

I don't think the blue ones have the right shape.

I like the salvaged posts. I think they got class. But if you want the ones from Lowes then I say go for it,

I like the salvaged ones, too. I would use three on each side of the front elevation. If you're not going to try to get it on some historical register, I'd use em.

It's the first thing you will see walking up to your house. Buy exactly what you want or it will bug you forever.

Just took another look at the photo of the salvaged....if you use those, I'd suggest flipping them so the "heavy" bulb part is on the bottom.

I think the other posters are right, those are upside down, but it is subtle. Here's some Paint rotating:

The old posts could work. Try them upside down. You have to find out what the house wants. Ya gotta talk to her, and see what she wants , right?

When in doubt, always go by what your gut tells you! But I prefer the salvaged ones myself - they look quality.

I like the salvaged ones as well and though it goes against my instinct, I would take Stucco's advice. If you install a compromise (the salvaged ones), you will have a daily reminder that you didn't get exactly what you wanted. Find a way to get the ones you really want.

I love the salvaged ones...they are the right proportion for your house too. Even if you decide to go with new ones..I'd definitely use posts that are no thinner than these salvaged ones.

Go with what you want. While the salvaged ones are cute---it would drive me up a wall that I wasn't able to get what I wanted and chose something else.
